Statement in response to the White Paper: Securing Australia's Energy Future

15 June, 2004

The Managing Director and CEO of Orica Limited, Mr. Malcolm Broomhead, welcomed the initiatives in the White Paper on Energy announced today including the measures to address Greenhouse Gas abatement.

"The policy has recognised the technological pathway as a solution to ‘Greenhouse’ and the need to support on-going research into energy generation, more energy-efficient industry and renewable energy options," he said.

"The policy also balances the need for a robust and vigorous Australian economy which will underwrite the research and development of these new technology solutions."

Mr. Broomhead said Orica was a good example where even current conventional technological plant upgrades can achieve results.

"Orica has realised a 25% decrease in CO2 emissions per tonne of production and a 14% increase in energy efficiency per tonne of production over the last five years mainly through the introduction of new technology plants and upgrade of existing plants," he said.

"This is a part of a continuing program to improve the resource utilisation of our operations which will result in further improvements in energy and greenhouse gas efficiency"
