Orica reports contained leakage at Port Kembla facility to NSW EPA
16 December 2011
Orica has today self reported to the NSW EPA a contained leakage of approximately 3,000 – 4,000 litres of sulphuric acid from a pipe contained within a concrete culvert at its Port Kembla facility. The sulphuric acid leaked from the "ship to shore" pipeline into the culvert where it was fully contained.
There was no damage to the environment and no risk to the community. No employees were in any danger as a result of this leakage. The safety containment system functioned as designed. The cause of the leakage is suspected at this time to be from a small hole in the pipeline and is being investigated.
