Orica reports overflow of weak Ammonium Nitrate fertilizer solution at Kooragang Island site
7 December 2011
At 1.50 pm today, Orica reported a spill incident to the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA). An estimated overflow of around 20,000 litres of weak ammonium nitrate fertilizer solution overflowed from a storage tank into a containment area with some spilling onto the ground. The ammonium nitrate solution was at approximately 30 percent concentration, equivalent to garden fertilizer.
Site Manager, Sean Winstone, said, "I am very unhappy that this overflow took place. The incident occurred in a new section of the Ammonium Nitrate Plant and was not associated with any re-start activities being undertaken at the site. Orica is investigating the cause of the overflow and re-start of the Nitric Acid and Ammonium Nitrate Plants will be delayed pending completion of this investigation"
"I want to reiterate the advice from NSW Health that there is no health risk to the community. The product involved in today’s overflow is non-hazardous and is not a dangerous good. It is equivalent to liquid fertilizer and has not gone offsite. NSW Fire and Rescue attended the site and left a short time later," he said.
